More red-light running violations over Fourth of July holiday

Millions of Americans will be heading out of town for the Fourth of July holiday. However, many of them will be breaking the law in the process. The Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous holidays when it comes to drivers running red lights. With so many drivers breaking traffic laws, motor vehicle accidents are bound to occur.

Nationally, the Fourth of July is the second worst holiday for red-light running violations behind Memorial Day. Last year, the National Coalition for Safer Roads reports that there were 25,000 incidents in which drivers ran a red light.

However, in Maryland, the Fourth of July is the worst holiday for red-light running violations. In fact, there are typically 38 percent more red-light running violations over the Fourth of July holiday than there are over Super Bowl weekend.

When people are reckless and ignore traffic laws, terrible tragedies can occur. People may suffer severe injuries or even die. People in Maryland who are injured in an accident may require hospitalization, surgery and painful rehabilitation. The accident may even prevent them from working.

Fortunately, negligent drivers can be held responsible through a personal injury lawsuit. Money that is awarded through a lawsuit can be used to cover medical expenses and any lost wages. After all, Maryland residents should not have to suffer financial setbacks because of another driver's careless behavior.

Whether it's a holiday weekend or not, nearly all motor vehicle accidents are preventable. It is, therefore, important for all motorists to obey traffic laws, remain attentive and drive cautiously. Sadly, one simple mistake can cause heartache for many people.
