There are few individuals who are trusted more by Baltimore children than a teacher. Teachers provide guidance and nurturing and can make a substantial impact on children's lives.

Unfortunately, however, some teachers leave an impact in a negative way, including one former substitute teacher who is currently facing sexual abuse charges. The teacher was originally charged with child pornography-related crimes, but the later charges relate to his alleged sexual abuse and photographing of a 16-year-old girl.

Cases such as this, where children are injured, can be tragic and tough to stomach. Even with the criminal justice system in place to prosecute offenders and deter others from similar conduct, injured children and their families can be left feeling incomplete and powerless.

This is where a personal injury lawsuit on the civil side can come into play. While no lawsuit can take away the harm that was done to the injured person, individuals can obtain relief by getting compensation for their injuries. Often times, this compensation is essential to help pay for medical expenses, therapy or other costs associated with the injury, as the medical costs or therapy may take years and may be very expensive.

Damages may also be available to compensate the person for his or her pain and suffering, as well as mental anguish suffered as a result of the injury. Accordingly, individuals who have been victims of sexual abuse should strongly consider filing a personal injury lawsuit against the abuser in order to hold that person accountable and obtain some measure of relief for the abuse.
