Shaun F. Owens, a partner at SBWD Law, joined the firm in 2008. Shaun serves as General Counsel for numerous Police Unions throughout Southern Maryland, including Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties, where he handles criminal and administrative cases for union members and their families. His practice involves criminal, civil, appellate and administrative litigation before the District and Circuit Courts of Maryland, Maryland Appellate Courts, and Administrative Trial Boards convened by over a dozen law enforcement agencies. Shaun also routinely handles juvenile matters, peace and protective order proceedings, consumer disputes (such as breach of contract and collections actions), and estate planning. Since 2014, Shaun has received the recognition of “Super Lawyers Rising Star.” Having handled over one thousand cases in twelve years of practice, Shaun has argued before nearly every Court and judge in the State of Maryland. His broad experiences helps him think outside of the box, and to approach every case with a keen, critical eye.
A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Shaun graduated with honors from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1998. Thereafter, Shaun received his undergraduate education from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. As an undergraduate, Shaun competed in collegiate athletics as a member of St. Mary’s College’s men’s rugby team and also volunteered as a career consultant for exiting seniors. Shaun earned his law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C. As a law student, Shaun also pursued a Master’s Degree in International Affairs through the American University School of International Studies, and concentrated on International Trade Law. During his three years at Washington College of Law, Shaun volunteered as a high school teacher in Washington, D.C., teaching constitutional law to students at H.D. Woodson and Ballou High Schools, through the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project founded by current Maryland Senator Jamin Raskin, and served as coordinator of the school’s social and fundraising unit, “Bar Review.” Shaun also continued to participate in competitive rugby with the West Potomac Rugby Football Club. His teaching background provides him with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to his clients.
Outside of his practice, Shaun is an avid fly-fisherman, smoked meat aficionado, and firearms marksman, though his main hobby is spending time with his two boys, Jack and Nate.
“Trial work is sniping, not goose hunting. You can take as many bad shots as you want and miss your bird, but one well-placed argument will take down an elephant.”
