Every Baltimore resident, no matter who they are or what their circumstances may be in life, needs medical care from time to time. By the same token, every Baltimore resident may be susceptible to personal injury when they receive ineffective or improper medical care. For example, former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle recently received $650,000 in a medical malpractice action he brought against a health care center. Rolle received spinal fusion surgery in 2008 to fuse his vertebra. While that surgery was reported as having been successful, he began playing football again after being released to play from the doctor. At that point, a second surgery had to be performed on Rolle, after which he suffered nerve problems in his hand and arm. As a result, Rolle was forced to retire.
The lawsuit involved the surgeon’s failure to perform proper follow-up care after the surgery. The jury awarded Rolle damages based on his forced retirement from football, which cost him a significant amount of compensation he would have otherwise earned.
Rolle’s case illustrates how any person can be subject to injury if proper medical care is not provided. While Rolle’s salary may be significantly more than the average person’s salary, the case also shows how injured persons can recover damages if they cannot earn the same income they previously did before the injury.
Injured persons can also recover damages for the pain and suffering they had to endure from the injury, as well as for the medical expenses the person incurred. Ultimately, there are many different kinds of damages available for injured parties, which are aimed at making the person whole because of the injury they suffered at the hands of the doctor.
