SBWD Law Names New Managing Partners and New Chair of Medical Malpractice Litigation

SBWD Law is pleased to announce that Michael “Mike” Davey has been appointed as the firm’s next Managing Partner and Catherine Dickinson has been appointed as the firm’s Associate Managing Partner. Mike and Catherine will assume their roles effective immediately, making Mike the firm’s second managing partner in the history of SBWD Law and Catherine the first woman and non-founder to hold a managing position with the firm!

Mike began his legal career with SBWD Law after a twenty-year career with the Maryland State Police. His current practice at the firm focuses on administrative and criminal proceedings. Mike will continue to oversee the firm’s administrative practice in addition to his role as Managing Partner. 

I am thrilled to lead the firm, along with Catherine, in its continued period of growth,” said Mike.

Catherine Dickinson Appointed as Associate Managing Partner

Catherine joined SBWD Law in 2016 and became the firm’s first female partner in 2019. She previously served as a law clerk in the firm’s litigation department while attending law school. She currently co-chairs the firm’s litigation department, which handles complex catastrophic injury cases. 

I am excited to help lead the firm and join the ranks of the growing number of women who lead Baltimore-area law firms,” said Catherine.

She has been recognized in the legal community for her success, including being named a Leading Woman Under 40 in Maryland and the Personal Injury Power List by The Daily Record in 2023. Catherine also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she teaches Trial Advocacy and Sexual Abuse Litigation. 

This is an exciting time for SBWD Law,” said partner and co-chair of the firm’s Litigation Department, Michael Belsky.We are transitioning from one excellent leader to two groundbreaking leaders. SBWD Law has grown exponentially in recent years, and I have no doubt that the firm will continue to excel under Mike and Catherine’s well-established leadership. They make a formidable team.

Michael and Catherine succeed Herbert “Herb” Weiner, a founding partner of SBWD Law. Herb’s longstanding dedication to the firm’s success is immeasurable. Herb will continue to serve in the firm’s administrative practice negotiating labor contracts throughout the State and will continue to be an extremely important mentor and role model to Mike and Catherine.

Sarah Smith Returns Medical Malpractice Chair

Additionally, SBWD Law is pleased to announce that Sarah L. Smith has returned to the firm as a Partner and Chair of the firm’s Medical Malpractice section. Sarah returns to SBWD Law after a highly successful career litigating medical malpractice and birth injury cases. Sarah is a formidable presence in the courtroom, having served as a part of the three-person trial team that secured the largest medical malpractice verdict in U.S. history.

Sarah is one of the best litigators I have ever worked with,” said Associate Managing Partner Catherine Dickinson, “and we could not be more excited to have her back to help lead our medical malpractice section.
