As a dedicated partner at Schlachman, Belsky, Weiner & Davey, Sarah L. Smith has been serving clients for more than a decade, advocating for those who have suffered due to medical malpractice, birth injury, and personal injury. With a passion for fighting for justice, Sarah has become a formidable presence in the courtroom, including as part of the three-person trial team that secured the largest medical malpractice verdict in U.S. history, Byrom v Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. In that case, a Baltimore jury awarded Zubida Byrom $229,640,000 for injuries she sustained during labor and delivery.
Sarah believes in the power and purpose of the civil justice system that was designed to empower the citizens of Maryland—and the United States—to hold others accountable, and to obtain compensation for their injuries. To that end, Sarah strongly believes there should be no stigma attached to hiring an attorney to navigate and use the civil justice system the way it was intended, especially when an injured person or family member is up against a corporate hospital system or any other person or entity with significant means to defend themselves in court.
With her focus on medical malpractice and birth injury, Sarah is committed to exposing institutional failings and disproportionate harm experienced by women as well as marginalized communities who seek healthcare in the United States. Women and people of color are more likely to receive poor or inadequate care because of implicit and explicit biases in the healthcare system.
Before focusing her practice on medical malpractice and birth injury, Sarah represented young men and women who had been exposed to and poisoned by deteriorating lead-based paint in rental properties in Baltimore City, as well as individuals who suffered catastrophic personal injuries.
Sarah is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law, and also holds an undergraduate degree from Villanova University with a dual major in English and Communications. Throughout more than a decade of legal practice, Sarah has litigated cases across the country and throughout the state of Maryland, consistently demonstrating a deep understanding of complex legal matters and a relentless commitment to securing justice for her clients. Motivated by a deep desire to help those who have been let down by the system, Sarah is driven to be an advocate for clients, ensuring their voices are heard and their lives are made better through the legal process. Sarah been recognized as a “Super Lawyers Rising Star”, a “Top Attorney in Maryland – Rising Star," a "Top 40 Under 40" and is a recipient of the 2020 President's Award from the Maryland Association for Justice. Sarah is also the co-chair of the Maryland Association for Justice Trial Reporter Magazine, was named to the 2023 Daily Record Power List for Personal Injury and Medical Malpractice. Sarah will also serve as a member of the Board of Governors for the Maryland Association of Justice beginning in June 2025.
